Potassium is one of the nutrients of many that are essential to normal bodily functioning. As such, people can and often suffer from a potassium deficiency. Unlike a deficiency of many other essential nutrients, a potassium deficiency often occurs without major side effects. There are a few side effects of potassium deficiency which may occur in some individuals that can be an extreme source of discomfort. Muscle cramps are the most common side effect of a potassium deficiency, but it can also cause slightly elevated blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. A potassium deficiency cannot be diagnosed by symptoms alone, but requires blood testing. Still, there are some who have found relief from these symptoms without testing but by rather increasing their potassium intake.
As with other nutrient deficiencies, treatment for a lack of potassium calls for rebuilding the levels of this nutrient in the body. The most common method of getting a proper intake of potassium is to eat more bananas, or other potassium rich foods. Bananas are naturally very rich in potassium and most doctors will advise patients to eat them for increasing potassium levels instead of increasing the intake of potassium by some other means.
However, there are those who worry about the number of calories in a banana. They will be glad to know that bananas are a very healthy food to add to their diet and offers many great health benefits. As the age old saying goes: “A banana a day keeps potassium deficiency away.” Well maybe not exactly like that but you get the point by now.
